Peter max was born in 1937 in Berlin, Germany. His Family moved a number
of times before finally settling down in the United States in 1953. Peter
Max studied Fine Arts in New York at the Art Students League, Pratt Institute,
and the School of Visual Arts. Apparently Max adopted the name "Max"
from fellow students and then aspiring artist, Max Oppenheimin. After
completing his studies, Peter Max opened a design studio and gained international
success as a designer for books, posters and product advertisements. In
an effort to spend more time on his own personal artistic career, Peter
Max closed his studio in 1964. It was following this transition that he
began to produce his own signature silk-screens and lithographs, characterized
by his use of bright colors and painterly mark making.
Peter Max's work, which he called "up art," was a part of the
psychedelic movement in graphic design during the early 1960's. His work
was extraordinarily influential and highly imitated in advertising design
throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Pictured above is the original Peter Max acrylic painting on paper titled
Mick Jagger. Peter Max created a number of Mick Jagger lithographs in
1969. He later recalled this edition due to a disagreement with the photographer
(whose photo Max's lithographs were based on), and painted over the original
lithographs with acrylic paint. . Pictured above is one these remarkable
paintings that evolved from his original lithographs.
Henri Matisse's images of dancers and of human figures in general, convey
expressive form first and the particular details of anatomy secondarily.
Matisse extended this principle into other fields; his bronze sculptures,
drawings and works in etching and lithography, reveal the same expressive
contours seen in his paintings. Although intellectually sophisticated,
Matisse always emphasized the importance of instinct and intuition in
the production of a work of art. He felt that an artist did not have complete
control over color and form; instead, colors, shapes and lines would come
to dictate to the sensitive artist how they might be employed in relation
to one another. He often emphasized his joy in abandoning himself to the
play of the forces of color and design. He explained the rhythmic but
distorted forms of many of his figures in terms of them working out of
a total pictorial harmony.
This lovely original Henri Matisse portrait, Tete de Margeurite,
was published in 1920.. Georgetown Frame Shoppe not only
