Born in 1881 in Malaga, Spain, Pablo Picasso was the most influential
artist in the development of modern painting. His contributions
to the world of print, particularily lithography and etching, are
enormous. Picasso embellished upon traditional techniques and incorporated
multiple foreign mediums into the processes of etching and lithography,
creating effects that had not been seen before.
Pictured above is a remarkable work of lithography titled "Le
Cavalier(The Rider)". An edition of 300 was published in 1968, of which
the work above is numbered 238. It measures 26" x 20" unframed
and is signed in pencil in the bottom right hand corner of the lithograph.
This piece was published by Henri Deschamps and printed by Mourlot. This print was published
in conjunction with a Picsso Exhibition at the Galerie Rosengart in Lucern, Switzerland. It is an avant lettre (before lettering)
printed on arches paper. The poster with lettering of this image was never printed. This image realized a price of $18,400
in a major auction house in may of 2004. Given its small edition size
"Le Cavalier" is quite rare. Created near
the end of his life, this work is a tribute to Picasso's unceasing
artistic vitality and uniqueness. We are currently selling this
work for $12,000 framed. If you are interested in viewing this
lithograph and others we are selling , please visit the "Picasso
(Signed)" section of our website.
Georgetown
Frame Shoppe has a great selection of original Alexander Calder
lithographs. While most are aware of Calder's sculptural works,
few know that he made a large number of lithographs during the 1960's and 1970's. Some of Calder's
lithogaphs were published by Aime Maeght in the art brochure titled "Derriere Le Miroir"
dedicated to graphic arts. Shown here is "Toureau avec Spirale
Rouge", published in 1975 in an edition of 75. We also have
a number of original vintage exhibition posters by Alexander Calder
that reveal his talent for two dimensional design.
Mary
Cassatt, an artist who had a lifelong involvement in the graphic
arts, produced some of the most subtle and honest images in the
medium. Shown here is one of her most famous transfer lithographs,
"Sara Wearing Her Bonnet and Coat", circa 1904. Her technique
and sensitivity to line reveal her virtuosity as an outstanding graphic
artist. In our collection we have a number of her original works for
sale such as the lovely color drypoint etchings "Sara Smiling",
"Margot Wearing a Bonnet" and "Denise Holding Her
Child".
