Peter max was born in 1937, in Berlin, Germany. His Family moved a number
of times before finally settling down in the United States in 1953. Peter
Max was trained in New York at the Art Students League, Pratt Institute, and
the School of Visual Arts. Apparently he adopted the name "Max"
from fellow students and aspiring artist, Max Oppenheimin. After completing
his studies, Peter Max opened a design studio and gained international
success as a designer for books, posters and product advertisements. In
an effort to spend more time on his own personal artistic career, Peter
Max closed his studio in 1964. It was following this transition that he
began to produce his own signature silkscreens and lithographs, characterized
by his use of bright colors and painterly mark making.
Peter Max's work, which he called "up art," was a part of the
psychedelic movement in graphic design. His work was extraordinarily influential
and highly imitated in advertising design during the late 1960s and early
1970s.
Pictured above is an original Peter Max mixed media and acrylic painting
on paper. This work, titled "Sunrise Sail," is the fulfillment
of Max's aesthetic vision, embracing the design potential of the graphic
arts, while stepping outside of its formal restrictions to explore a more
psychedelic and imaginative aesthetic. Georgetown Frame Shoppe has sold this piece, but
we encourage you to click on the link above to view other Peter Max artwork we have available.
Henri Matisse's images of dancers and of human figures in general, convey
expressive form first and the particular details of anatomy secondarily.
Matisse extended this principle into other fields; his bronze sculptures,
drawings and works in etching and lithography, reveal the same
expressive contours seen in his paintings. Although intellectually sophisticated,
Matisse always emphasized the importance of instinct and intuition in
the production of a work of art. He felt that an artist did not have complete
control over color and form; instead, colors, shapes and lines would
come to dictate to the sensitive artist how they might be employed in
relation to one another. He often emphasized his joy in abandoning himself
to the play of the forces of color and design. He explained the rhythmic
but distorted forms of many of his figures in terms of them working out
of a total pictorial harmony.
This lovely original Henri Matisse portrait, L'Eveil, is from
the portfolio Poesies Antillaises, published by Mourlot in 1972.

Picasso began making linocuts while working in the south of France on
the famous Vallauris Chapel at a time recalled by many as the 20th century
renaissance of art during the post-war years. Originally he intended to
employ the technique for simply the creation of posters for exhibitions
at Vallauris, but became inspired to develop his interest further. Picasso
worked closely with printer Hidalgo Arnera creating hundreds of prints.
Pictured above is Picasso's Bulls in Vallauris. This original Picasso
linocut is hand signed in crayon in the bottom right hand corner and numbered
183/198, published in 1957, by Arnera, Vallauris. This linocut measures
36" x 24" unframed.

Des Mauvais Sujets is the first suite of color etchings Marc Chagall
created without the use of pochoir. This suite was completed in 1958.
Des Mauvais Sujets illustrates the psychological drama played out
within an artist, between his identity and that of what he creates. De
Mauvais Sujets was issued in an edition of 10 portfolios on Japon Nacré,
signed and numbered from A/J to J/J, 112 portfolios printed on velin d'Arches,
each of which were numbered. In addition, there were 16 portfolios hors
commerce for collaborators in the production numbered from I-XVI, and
25 portfolios for the artist lettered from A to Y. Pictured above is etching
number III, from the Des Mauvais Sujets portfolio. This work is from the edition of
112, published by Les Bibliophiles de l'Union Françcaise in Paris.
The color etchings were printed by Jacques Frélaut and Roger Lacourière.
Pictured above is the original Pierre-Auguste Renoir lithograph titled
La Pierre aux Trois Croquis (Second State), one of twelve lithographs
from Renoir's Douze Lithographies suite. This original Renoir lithograph
is signed in the stone, and was published circa 1904, in an edition of
950 printed on Vellum paper. Reference: Delteil 41. We are currently offering
this work for $7,500 archivally framed. To view more lithographs from
