Avoiding any impulse to distil my subjects according to standard imperatives of gender and sexuality, I worked with models whom I photographed - capturing them at unstructured moments. The result was not a pose; neither a sentimental moment of "vulnerability" (though that element is present); rather, an image of a subject who is both aware and unaware of the presence of the spectator; who is conscious of the performance he or she is engaged in, but not completely in control of it. That brief moment which is the loss of control - both on the side of the artist (who is not structuring poses) and the subject (who is not posing), is the focus of this series.
