George Bizet's opera Carmen is one of the most famous and best loved operas of all time. With bold colors and vivid imagery, Marc Chagall captures the fierce passion of French opera-comique in his lithograph of the same name. This gorgeous lithograph was created to celebrate the inauguration of the Metropolitan Opera House of New York. The Carmen poster was inspired by a detail on "The Triumph of Music," one of two large decorations the opera house commissioned Chagall to design for the entranceway.
In his Catalogue Raisonne, Charles Sorlier writes that Chagall fashioned the central character to look like Mr. Rudolph Bing, the director of the Metropolitan Opera and the person who had commissioned the painting. In doing so, Chagall was reviving the ancient tradition of secretly, but recognizably portraying the patron of the work.
Carmen was executed by Charles Sorlier under Chagall's direct supervision. The lithograph was printed by Mourlot, Paris in an edition on 3,000. It was published by Editions of the Metropolitan Opera in 1966. It measures approximately 40” by 26” unframed and 44” by 30” framed. $4,000 framed
This original lithograph, The Fight Between Jacob & the Angel, was engraved by Charles Sorlier in 1967 under Marc Chagall's direct supervision. Inspiration came from an oil on canvas by Marc Chagall titled The Struggle of Jacob & the Angel. As this momentous battle of Man versus God is played out against Chagall’s deep blue night sky, a boldly hued crowd looks on. The Fight Between Jacob & the Angel was published by the Editions of National Museums, Paris and printed by Mourlot on Arches wove watermarked paper. Sorlier also used this composition for a poster version with text advertising an exhibition in celebration of Marc and Valentina Chagall's donation of the Message Biblique to the Louvre Museum in Paris. 'CH. SORLIER GRAV.' is printed in black in the lower left of the image. This original lithograph is hand signed by Marc Chagall in pencil, lower right, and numbered 11/100. It measures approximately 30” by 21” unframed. $28,000

This original linocut, Exhibition Vallauris, was created by Pablo Picasso in 1956. The decade Picasso spent living and working in the south of France is recalled by many as the renaissance of art in the twentieth century. During his stay in Vallauris, Picasso began making linocuts for various art exhibitions. He felt inspired by this new technique and continued to work closely with printer Hidalgo Arnera to create hundreds of prints.
This 1956 linocut is particularly desirable because of its vivid colors. It was printed using five blocks and five colors: violet, yellow, red, blue and green. This original Pablo Picasso linocut is from an edition of 200 and measures approximately 39” x 26” unframed. It is hand signed by Pablo Picasso in red pencil. Call for Value
