Original Henri Matisse Lithographs Published by Verve

Henri Matisse is considered one of the most significant French painters of the 20th century. Matisse initially trained in law, practiced it until the age of 23, when he gave it up to study art full-time. Around 1905, Matisse began to develop a very distinct style of painting, charcterized by daring bright colors and broad brush strokes. The same year, Matisse exhibited at the Salon d'Automne as a part of the group dubbed Les Fauves, or, The Wild Beasts. Henri Matisse worked ceaslessly throughout his entire life, and was fortunate enough to receive the rewards of his efforts in his life-time. Aside from being exhibited around the world, Matisse received the French Legion of Honor in 1925. In 1941, Matisse suffered from a surgical error in efforts to remove an abdominal cancer. The effect was such that he was unable to stand at his easle to paint. Matisse, compelled to continue creating, turned to paper cuts, mixed-media, and collages. Pictured at your right is the original color lithograph titled "Zulma", after one of Matisse's paper cutouts and goauches. This lovely piece was issued by Teriade and published by Verve in 1958, 4 years after his death in 1954. Following this edition of 2000, Matisse's original lithographic stone's were destroyed, making it a closed edition. This piece measures 10-1/2" x 14", and is currently on display in our gallery along with the other wonderful lithographs from this Matisse portfolio. We are currently selling "Zulma" for $500 unframed, or $650 framed.

Joan Miro's Constellations

"Constellations", a suite of twenty-two Pochoirs, was created in 1959 after Miro fled to France following the fall of the Spanish Republic. This particular piece, "Le reveil au petite jour", measures 14" x 17", and is one of Miro's Pochoirs from the Constellations series. Andre Breton, the French poet and friend of Joan Miro, composed poems to illustrate, or rather, shed light on the context in which this body of work was created. Georgetown Frame Shoppe has a great selection of original Joan Miro lithographs. We carry portfolios such as "Ubu Roi", illustrations based on the text of Alfred Jarry, published by Teriade in 1966 and, "Album 21", a portfolio of twenty-one color lithographs made in 1978 and published by Maeght Editeur.

Original Signed Pablo Picasso Vallauris Linocuts

Picasso began making linocuts while working in the south of France on the famous Vallauris Chapel. Originally he intended to employ the technique for the creation of posters for exhibitions at Vallauris, but was inspired to develop his interest further. Picasso worked closely with printer Hidalgo Arnera creating hundreds of prints. Pictured above is one of these lovely linocuts created in 1960. This piece measures 29-1/2" x 25", and is numbered 59/170. This original Picasso linocut is now for sale at the Georgetown Frame Shoppe for $7,500.00 framed.

Signed Marc Chagall Colored Bible Etchings

Pictured above is the original Marc Chagall Bible etching, "David brings Goliath's head to Saul". This etching is numbered 89/100, and is signed in pencil in the lower right hand corner. Georgetown Frame Shoppe has a number of rare colored etchings from the series of 105 etchings titled, "The Bible". We also have the entire black and white portfolio which can viewed on our website. For Chagall, illustrating the Bible was a monumental task that took him from 1931 to 1957. The creation of "The Bible" series was interupted a number of times, dominantly by the death of his publisher, Vollard, and WWII. From 1939 to 1952, the plates for this work remained unfinished and stacked in a warehouse. Finally, in 1957, all 105 etchings were completed by Chagall, and published by Vollards successor, Teriade. We are currrently selling this piece for $6,500.00 framed.
